THE WHITE HOUSE AT CHELSEA
(After the watercolour by Thomas Girtin, 1800)
The expanse of blue
overawes Battersea Bridge
eyeing reflectively.
The light poised on the
riverbank persists for an
unending moment.
The windmill in flight
sails motionlessly close to
its wingless sister.
Small boats drift on the
stillness of the River Thames
mirrored in the sky.
Dusk stays the shadows,
the painter’s brush the transience
of the quiet day,
the Old Church its bell.
Eternity purrs like an
angel in the glow.
